ok my jags laid eggs about 10 days ago, and today the fry seem to just be starting there first day as free swimmers. They don't stray to far from between the rocks that they were hatched in but there starting to just come out a few inches and explore. They are very very tiny, look like tiny tadpoles. What can I feed them at this point??? or do I feed them yet??? Every once in a while I see the mother eat one... then spit the fry out??? what is that behavior mean??

The Mother will put the frye in her mouth often , usually to keep them where she wants them to be...

You could use flake food and grind it in your fingers into a powder like consistantsy,

Or Hikari makes a food called first bites, sold at most Pet-Co etc...

People also use egg yolk, injected with an injector, seems to much work!!

Good luck:headbang2 keep us posted!!!

My breeding pair of jags have spawned out 7 times in the last 11 months. As soon as I see the first few fry actively swimming up from the gravel, I would feed them the Hikari First Bites food. This food is like powder and it helps to swirl it into the water to allow the food to settle on down to the fry. The fry will eventually all swim up from the gravel. You will be amazed how many fry can by hiding in the gravel. The school of fry will learn to start feeding from the surface. I will mix in the food into the water to some extent just to help out some of the fry that are still hanging close to the gravel.

I stick with the Hikari First Bites for about a week and a half before switching over to ground up cichlid flakes. I continue with the ground up flakes and then add in frozen cubes of daphnia. It might take a day or two for them to adjust to the daphnia. The daphnia eventually will give way to frozen cubes of blood worms. It would be scary to know how many pounds of blood worms I have fed my jags over the last year. The small fry will continue on with flake food and eventually switch to small cichlid pellets.

Good luck with you baby jags!

my pair is in a 150 gallon alone, with their fry. Is there any reason for me to remove the fry or can they growout in this tank with there parents???
