I was called in to work this morning because someone was sick, so I get there and was telling everyone about my tanks I got in Lincoln and one of my co workers said I have a tank you can have. I said, "Really?" It is a 20 gal. saltwater tank that has been set up for years, she has some fish in there but what I think is really cool is there are starfish in the tank also. I have always wanted to start up a saltwater tank, but never had enough time or money. Well, now I get one for free. She said she has about $3,000 into the tank but she just doesn't want to take care of it anymore. So that would bring my total tanks up to 7. Thats alot but I love my fishies. Anyone care to help me with info about saltwater tank setups it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know, maybe the tank is bigger than that. She said that her son had it at first and then gave it to her because he was moving out of state. So maybe she is confused on what size it actually is, I dont know. I wont know all the details until I pick it up tomorrow. Could anyone give me some information on what it takes to run a saltwater setup. I am clueless, as I only have freshwater tanks now.

20 g sounds small. A 20g SW would be tough to keep balanced. Lets hope its at least a 40.

I wonder if 3000 includes everthing ever put into the tank.

Nice grab in any event...

she must be counting water chemicals equipement and every fish that she bought cus that a lot for a small tnak

Yep, she confirmed it was only a 20 gallon tank. Thats ok, everything she has for the tank comes with me. She said she has been neglecting it for a while now and it has algae and stuff. I am picking it up on Friday afternoon after I get off work. I can't wait to get it here, I have never owned saltwater fish before, this could be interesting.

What kind of fish are in the tank? If you have never delt with sw you better hope it is an extreamly hardy fish because it is going to be very hard to keep a tank of that size in a stable condition.

I have never kept saltwater fish before but have learned alot from the girl at work that is giving me this tank. And if I ever have any questions she is only a phone call away. I know there are some starfish in there and one Clown fish. I will post more when I know what I have in the tank when I get it home here in a couple of hours.

A 20 gallon isn't too bad to maintain. I have a 10 gallon that used to house dwarf seahorses but I sold them all. I still have the 10 gallon running with a couple hermits and a fighting conch. The tank breeds copapods very well and I feed them to my 32 gallon FOWLR (fish only with live rock) tank. I find the 10 easy to maintain now that i've been in the hobby for a number of years. I'm sure with the a helpfull person directing you that you should do just fine with the 20. The only thing you really have to watch out for is evaporation and toping it off with fresh regularly and keeping an eye on your salinity. Some people will talk about how it's hard to maintain chemicals when adding them but with saltwater I don't suggest adding any chemicals. The only thing I do is soak the food in garlic guard and I never have any problems with fish health or parasites. Nothing to it. Good luck.:headbang2
