Hi MFK'ers I recently started working at Floating Islands West and noticed that they had tons of what we call bio-matrix scraps lying around. I took it upon myself to figure out things that I could do with it, and since I am a MFK the first thing that popped into my head was filter media.
What this stuff looks like is filter floss, except slightly more pourous. So if it were to be used as a mechanical filter you would have to let it get slightly clogged to pull out the smaller particles. The surface area though is huge. The best part is that it is made up of 100% recycled plastic (don't worry about leaching though, it's not that type of plastic) so it is pretty sturdy and can be rinsed out and reused no problem.
It comes in sheets that are about 2 inches thick and can be cut to almost any size and shape. So here is where the free part comes in, I would like to give some people here a trial of this stuff. The person would have to promise though that they will use it as filter media and report how it did in their experience, basically the pros and cons. Also if you think of anything else to do with it, say an algae scrubber off of the walls on your glass tank, or even a pot scrubber, I'd like to hear about that also.
