when do the fry become free swimmers. I ask because my first batch of fry have come, its not much only convict fry but its my first batch so can anyone help me?
Once laid, the eggs take an average of 3 days to hatch at temps within 75-82F. They take a further 3-5 days in thw wriggler stage. After that, they are then free swimming. It is when they start to swim that you must feed them.
i thought that most fry were just filter feeders? and as of now they have been in the wriggler stage for about a day and a half. if they are not filter feeders then what do i feed them?
They can filter feed fine for quite some time provided that there is a rich source of microlife for them to munch on. My rosy barb fry for example survive solely off what grows in the java moss for more than a week. You can feed con fry bbs but its going to be wasted on a fish that can barely swim yet and which is constantly being swallowed and spit out in a different location by its parents. My con fry usually took about four days from hatching to be free swimming and I usually fed them all to my fish before they themselves needed to feed. On the rare occaisions they did live long enough a little bbs was good to keep up their nutritional value.
