I was wondering, I like to feed my fish krill, and I usually purchase the cheap-o freeze dried krill from wal mart. But I have knoticed that half the bottle is powdered krill that is useless to me and my fish.

I went to the sea food isle and purchased frozen pre cooked shelled shrip. I have been thawing out 5-6 pieces a night and feeding that to them. Do y'all think this is ok, or better than the freeze dried stuff?

They seem to love it, even the pleco gets in on the action!
PS I HAVE to feed krill of my JD gets real upset with me, he's a bit picky. :screwy:

I also feed a wide varriety of foods, like pellets, crickes, crawdads, flies, frozen plancton (purchased for them as babbies, now they just eat the whole cube) , and frozen peas, and fresh beef.

Thanks for the info!

feeding raw shrimp is perfectly fine for them...not sure about as their whole diet but as a part of a varied diet it is fine. if you want to use some kind of freeze dried krill try ordering from www.kensfish.com. they're freeze dried krill superba is great. it's high in protein and lower in fat than a lot of other brands. the price is also great for the amount you get. he also has freeze dried krill pacifica but these are much smaller pieces and are better for smaller fish. here are pictures of the sizes of the bags of krill you get. oh and keep in mind that in the krill superba there was very little, if any powder. :) the spray dried krill on the bottom is obviously partially used...I only got the 1/4 lb. and had already poured the rest of the bag into another container, but you can still see how big the bag is. it's a lot of krill powder and will go a long way. :D

Thanks guys, unfortunatly there are no asian markets near me so i'll have 2 try the on line site!

Thank Y'all

I have the same problem with the walmart-wardley krill. You get 15% Krill and 85% dust. I will look for the frozen stuff.

make sure the asian supermarket ones aren't salted, a lot of them are

The "fish lady" at walmart was telling me she will get the frozen seafood combo : octopus, squid, shrimp, and scallops...and blend them up in her blender, freeze the goo in ice cube trays and feed that as a treat.

I just got the frozen salad shrimp, they love it....I dont think my stomach could handle the goo.

Your correct ewurm...that was exactly my problem with the same product. Waste of money and about the same cost as the frozen "people" shrimp!

Also I have knoticed they (the oscars) eat less of the frozen shrimp, they get full quicker, so the frozen is going a long way. I usually go though a tube of frozen shrimp in 2 weeks, I've been giving the frozen for a week now and hardly made a dent. So it seems to be more economical.

I just did not know if it was as good for them diatary wise. Shrimp are not their natural prey. I have played with the idea of getting frozen people crawdads. I have given fresh crawdads from the ditch out front of my house, but I worry about polutants from the neighbour hood being in the crawdads. I have had one poisioning instant with a spider fed to the oscars, dont want to repeat that.
