The 5 day old con fry are swimming now.....My lfs sells live bbs by the ounce.....Ounce is a lot.....Is it o.k. to freeze leftover bbs and just defrost small cube sized cuts for later use????For proper portions, I was thinking of freezing portions in ice cube trays....Thanks

I hatch my own from Sera packet mixes, but the principal is the same... I use a bunch of ice cube trays and a large plastic syringe with 6" of airline tubing on the end. Suck up the bbs with the syringe and half fill each cube compartment with the live shrimp & brine mix. Then suck up some freshwater (u can take it out of your tank) and top up with that. The fresh water helps it freeze. Pop the trays in the freezer and your done!
I freeze all my bbs within 12 hours of hatching for maximum freshness.
Then u have ready made sterile portions of highly nutritious food for your fry!
The great thing about this method is that it's real easy to get your portions right and helps prevent overfeeding.
I've been doing this for about a month and my Platy fry love it. Pop a cube in the tank and they go nuts. It also cuts down on waste as, unless you've got a LOT of fry, you usually end up with too much bbs and they're hard to keep alive for more than a couple of days unless you've got a special set up to do so and feed them etc.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Please note, if you can't be sure of the source of the brine, strain the shrimp through a paper coffee filter, wash it out into a jug with fresh, clean water and freeze from there.
That should help avoid introducing nasty bacteria into your tank from the brine, although the freezing effect should help cut that down anyway.

Thank you for the info members...My fry are now 6 days old...I estimated that 100 have survived to this point...They've eaten well when all you see are orange bellies...BMXER4EVER, I've frozen my first ounce...I'll keep the fry formula simple for the first month..

has anyone tried to suspend the bbs in geletinized vitamin enriched water?

holds together a little nicer when you plop them in

Hope I didn't give any bad advice earlier on, I'm still learnin about all this kinda stuff at the moment, but what I described seems to be working for me so far, but thats only with baby Platys. They seem to be getting a good boost out of my method, but any advice all YOU guys can give ME would be greatly appreciated!! It's kinda weird seeing big fry munching on a defrosting ice cube, but so far so good! It definetly extends the use of each hatching I have, but, as mentioned earlier, I may be losing nutritional value.

BMXer, so you drop the ice cube directly in? I thaw out my cubes in a small container and then serve the bbs.
