My senegalus is surfacing more frequently (once every 5 mins or less). Is there a reason for this? How often do your sengs surface for air? I'm worried that this may be a sign that water quality is deteriorating, and I just did a 20% water change 2 days ago. He has been eating more lately and getting more food, so there's more debris on the bottom. He's getting noticeably plumper too, so I'm wondering if that's a factor. In tank is just gravel and a clump of java moss he likes to hide in- should I go bare tank? Bare bottom?

Was it doing this before the waterchanges or just after the change?

I was away for the weekend, so I wasn't able to keep an eye on him Sunday. I noticed it monday and did the change. I used bottled distilled water, so there shouldn't be an influx of chlorine or other chemicals associated w/ tap water.

My bichir tank is in my bedroom and at night I heard splashes like every ten minutes (of course there are six bichirs in the tank). They hardly ever hit the surface during the day, of course. You might want to actually test your water to ensure theres no problems.

I don't have a test kit on hand, so I'd have to run out and get one. Should I get an all in one kit or just strips to test pH, ammonia, nitrates, etc?

Get an all in one test kit -Anne

I have found when they are more active they surface more. They burn more oxygen, so they need to take more in.

Thanks, I see him surfacing a bit more now that I put in a more powerful filter. More current = more exercise. He's finally taking omega one shrimp pellets whole- should I worry about choking? He'll get one down his throat then surface for air once or twice. Previously, he let the pellets sit on the bottom for a little while to soften then chew on it to get it into a manageable size.

If you're concerned get a single edge razor blade and cut the pellets in half-Anne
