Think of freshwater fish like marine fish. Can saltwater fish be kept in freshwater? No, same way with freshwater in brackish water. Brackish water fish are more adaptable to freshwater and saltwater, but even they tend to need to be kept in the correct type of water for the most part. Freshwater fish, are just freshwater fish. In brackish water they suffer much worse than a brackish fish in freshwater.

On the other hand, there are a lot of fish that are not strictly freshwater or brackish water. Many gobies are found in both and can thrive in either. Livebearers can survive in fresh or brackish water, including the predatory Belonesox belizanus. If you are ever unsure, you can find out what kinds of water fish come from from fishbase.org, just google search the fish you want (scientific name) then fishbase, and the top result should be the fish's fishbase page. For example, google search "Belonesox belizanus fishbase" and you should find the fish's page and find that it is found in freshwater and brackish water.
