What is the best way to go about doing a fresh water dip? I just got home with 2 Cortez Rays and I am acclimating them right now but before they go in my pond I want to give them a bath in fresh water as to knock off anything that might be hanging on them. About how long should they be in there and of course I know to match the temp and such

Ok I know there's a mod or 2 that can chime in as I am approaching the 2 hour mark and would like to have them in the pond in 3 hours, thanks

where did the come from? Do you have a good reason to think they have something on them? I think, in your thread about the cali rays zoodiver might have said something about a freshwater bath and I think he said that it would be quick.

I bought them from the same place that the last 2 came from so i allways assume they have some sort of parisite on them and the male was like scratching back and forth on the bottom of the tub or at least thats what it looked like so I thought of doing the bath

Match temp and pH... pH being the more important... they'll handle a few degrees change. Have a LOT of air going in the FW bath.
Watch them while they are in there. If they start to freak out or just crash, pull them ASAP.

I only put them in the fresh water for a couple of minutes if that and they were trying to climb out of the tote so off they went into the pond and ate a couple of hours later and the bigger new male is trying to strut his stuff, hanging all over the females. So interesting to me is their interaction smelling each other and rubbing and such. I am glad I decided to go with the rays. Today we had church at our house because our building isnt just ready yet and wouldnt you know I went to shut the light over the pond off and I shut the return pump off instead and it back fed out of the return pipe cause some dummy has'nt put a check valve yet and 100+ gallons all over the basement (unfinished) floor again but I needed a water change anyways and it didnt stop about 20 people coming down to take a look and do some touching.

OUCH. That's a lot of water on the floor.

I find freshwater dips to be extremely stressful on any elasmobranches and try to avoid them as best I can. I always treat new animals in a strong prazi bath for about an hour to an hour and a half. This method works very well but you have to be careful because a prazi bath won’t kill parasite eggs such as fluke eggs so it’s a good idea to have a quarantine tank to treat them in for a week or so.

I agree, way too stressful, but it didnt hurt the males hormones as far as going after the females.
