So I saw some fresh water clams for sale on ebay and got to wondering why I don't hear more people on here using them as a natural aid to the filtration of their tanks. Has anybody on here had any stories to share regarding these and what kind of temps have you run on your tanks that you put them in? I'm thinking about adding some to my SA/CA tank, but not if 80 degrees will cook them.

Many species are illegal in many states, so check your laws first.

Also some species release toxic compounds at times (I want to say related to breeding actually) that in a contained system could be deadly to fish.

They also are filter feeders so hard to feed in an aquarium.

They also die easy, but look the same dead and alive, so when they die they can cause toxic spikes in ammonia because you don't know they are dead and don't remove them.

All that being said I really want some too, so if you find good ones that are legal in Minnesota let me know!!!

My Lfs had a ton in a few months ago. They all ended up dying in about a week. I think for the most part many people don't keep then because they are hard to keep alive.

I have had mixed success with clams. I bought some for my african tank and they all died. I didn't have any ammonia issues though. A few years ago I had a native tank with clams that I collected from the same lake that most of the fish came from and had no problems with them. The native tank had no heater,so the water was always room temp. The african tank was at 80 so that may have been a factor.

That guy selling on e bay seems to be the only source for clams that I can find on the web. I have been researching them because I want to raise them for my Fahaka. I think they need a tank of their own for long term success. They don't need a heated tank. I wouldn't use more than a sponge filter. I think if you sprinkle powdered fish food in, that would be an excellent food source. I think that if you stirred your gravel every few days it would get settled out food back in the water column. Not sure how they spawn, but apparently little ones appear out of nowhere. I am going to order 100 after I get moved and see what I can do.

Thanks doomiedee. Those look kinda close to the ones on ebay.

I asked the ebay seller if they knew the exact species, but was told they had no idea.:duh: So I ordered 30 of them anyway and just put them in my quarantine tank today (fingers crossed) they survive the temp.

Rodger- that is the secondary reason as to why I am trying them since my Fahaka is close to 10" now and I'm looking for some possible food sources for her other than the store every week.

Your welcome. I'm not 100% but from what I've read there is only one kind of true freshwater clams. Most are brackish or full salt water atleast from what I've found online.
