Hi! Does anyone know how to take care of freshwater clams/oysters? Bought some over the internet and put some in my 125 fw tank and my pond. What do they eat? Want to make sure they don't die in my 125. Thanks for your advice.:grinno:

It would be nearly impossible to keep a freshwater clam in an aquarium. The amount of food required to keep them alive would seriously pollute the tank and degrade the water quality to the point where nothing could live. If they aren't provided with a good water flow and a constant food supply they will starve to death.

Freshwater clams and oysters are bivalve filter feeders. Residual food in your water will often times suffice, but some people feed them finely ground shrimp mixed with tank water. They use a turkey baster or syringe to focus the mix on the clams.

My experience with freshwater clams has been positive, but I have found that they do not like salt and prolonged temps over 85F. I personally never fed the clams; they just always seemed to thrive with regular water changes.

Many others may have other opinions or experiences... this is only my two cents.

I believe filter-feeding invertebrates are fine in a freshwater aquarium, provided there is a LARGE amount of current (something like 10x turnover an hour), and liquid foods intended for invertebrates are added. I've been keeping bamboo filter shrimp and asian freshwater clams for over a year, I just use Kent Micro-vert and everyone seems to extend their siphons and be all happy-like.

Aqualandpetplus.com/index.htm if you look up freshwater clam on this site it comes with pretty good information. It is a great site i would recommend it to you.

The "nasty pollutant" is ammonia.

I have one in my 75gal tank for about 7 months now and i never had trouble with it. I barely feed my fish so i dont think that is an issue (for me that is).
