Hi Anyone done a successful freshwater refugium? does it really help clean your water? What plants is best to use and what is needed to set one up. Please share your setup and post any pictures if you have.

I don't know about cleaning the water, but it does wonders for nitrate reduction if you have enough planted bio mass.

If you search the forum you will find a lot of articles on this, just like setting up a sump but you will need to add lighting for the plants.

right now i am using anabius plants. with light. i will post some pictures once later. I havent really seen a good freshwater refugium that i can get idea with.

Anyone else want to share.

anubias won't do you much good, since they are so slow growing. Try using hornwort, anachris, fox tail, cabomba, bacopa, hygrophylia in conjuction with duckweed on top. Take that + lots of light and CO2 (high photosynthesis rate) and you will be in good shape.
