Hello guys I have a Gymnothorax Tile in my 20 gallon long. Im trying to understand his behavior/feeding habits. He seems extremely aloof and never reacts when I do anything with the tank. If I wave alive/dead shrimp in front of him or place it near him he doesnt react. If I put live shrimp in there he never hunts or eats them. Im starting to wonder what hes been eating all this time hes been in the tank for about a little over a month. He doesn’t really seem too aware of his surroundings. I know they have bad eyesight but he doesnt seem to smell the food I put in either. The water is currently fresh hes only about “12 long so he’ll double in size and eventually be in brackish. Its just him in the tank with baby leaf fish and baby betta he never bothers or acknowledges either of them.

I’d suggest adding some salt to the tank. It’s loss of appetite could be from being in pure freshwater. Just something to think about.

Would agree with this, could be causing osmotic stress by being in fresh water

I agree with the above, they are not really fresh water fish, only known to enter fresh water for short periods.
And if your water is soft, and/or low in pH, this could also be problematic, pH somewhere between 8 and 9 are best.
They also need continuous flow, and lots of aeration, a turnover in the tank of 5 to 6 times per hour filtration to provide the oxygen concentration needed.
Since they come from river mouths, they live in a constantly moving wall of water, and strong tidal fluctuations.
If it were me, I'd add marine salt (the kind with other marine elements used in salt water aquariums), and beside filtration a powerhead or wave maker type using a venturi port.

+1, also careful with those tankmates
