I have a couple Freshwater Clams on order for one of my community aquariums. I just had a quick question for anyone who has kept them with some success in the past. Any tips on feeding/keeping these little guys fat and happy?

Thanks in advance.

These clams are filter feeders, filtering what they eat from the water that they live in.

I just typed in and went on the first website

I realize that they are filter feeders. My question was, do any of you do anything special to feed these guys? I know that I can throw them in the tank and just let them do what they do, but I was wondering if there was anything that you guys have found that the clams seem to respond to/like to eat.

Thanks in advance

I had Asian freshwater clams few yrs ago.
If you have fish and feed they do well. As long as not to warm . I had mine at room temp tank with White Clouds and fed little bit flaked food twice a day .
I mention feeding as some who keep planted tanks may not feed as much as non planted tank.
This might sound silly but when you get them make sure they are alive . I purchased 6 and 3 were dead.
Shell was shut tight they didn't move for couple weeks opened one and horrid rancid smell the others were dead to.
The other 3 did great .

The live ones will move around and bury (might depend on type but they all move ,slightly open and close)
So place them in front of tank for first to watch them. Make sure none are dead

You will see when they are situated, as they will keep their vent up and open.

I used to powderize a food pellet and introduce it to the water.

just leaving them is good enough theres no real reason for you to need any other foods unless theyre in their own tank and if so you should get some fish

Quick question, I heard when they breed - the offspring will hang out on the gills of your fish. Isn't that hazardous for the fish?
