Found this in a report a company is soliciting my company to buy. Keep in mind this only reflects people who responded to the survey. I'm sure there are tons more of households that have dogs, cats, and fish that did not respond to the survey.

According to the 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey, the number of
pet-owning households in the U.S., by type of pet, is as follows:
• Dogs: 44.8 million
• Cats: 38.4 million
• Freshwater fish: 14.0 million
• Birds: 6.4 million
• Small animals: 6.0 million
• Reptiles: 4.8 million
• Equine: 4.3 million
• Saltwater fish: 0.8 million

So what are you thoughts on this?

thats exactly how i'd think it would be, although not realising that horses and reptiles would be so close. Too few people keep saltwater fish. I may have put small animals above birds though... then again, I guess it depends on what they count as small animals...

i figured reptiles to be as high as bird though.

Those numbers seem to be accurate.

man i dislike the top 2 answers. stupid begging at the dinner table, stupid fur in everything, stupid pee on the floor... none of my fish can do that.

I was surprised FW fish was in 3rd, but not surprised Dogs where number one. It does surprise me there are more people with horses than SW fish. It would be interesting to see this data over several years, to see how numbers have changed over the years.

in europe there are people with cats then dogs. I think it is suprising that it is the other way around in america.

I find that normal. There are more urban area in Europe and people usually don't have large yards. In the US there are more rural type areas. I was suprised at the number of horse owners!!!

I reckon this order is spot on. Not so much the numbers, but the list, to me anyway, is almost perfect. When you truly think about it, reptiles are no where near as popular as birds.
