I live In South Florida and our tap water is crap! If I were to just do a water change and add fresh tap water to an aquarium it is pretty much a gurantee that the fish would slowly die as there is a lot of chemicals in the tap water so I have to always buy a bottle of prime or tap water conditoner but prices are increasing. I pour about 2 or 3 capfuls in each bucket before I refill the tank,. Do you think 1/2 capfuls are enough? I think if I did 1/2 capfuls my prime would last longer.

You need to know what your chlorine or chloramine level is at your home to determine how much water conditioner to use. You can buy chlorine test strips at a pool supply store and elsewhere but if you have chloramine, need to also use an ammonia test kit to see what you got.

Consider buying Seachem Safe which is a dry product or other similar brands but you still need to know what you got at your home so you don't waste both product and money.

Check out the following article from Setup and Filtration Cost effective water conditoners

Contact your LFS & ask how they condition the water for their tanks.

When I got back into fish keeping I was using Prime as well. A one liter bottle barely lasted a month @$20 a bottle. I learned about Safe and switched to it. My chlorine levels called for just 1/8 of a teaspoon per water change for a 125gal tank. I was forced to sell of my tanks I had used the same container of Safe for three years and it wasn't even half gone yet.
