I have been looking and searching through this website and others on how to start a saltwater tank. there is conflicting info on this subject and dont know what to do. To start of I want to have a saltwater tank with live rock and simple saltwater fish to keep. I have delt with sand in the past and i did not like it because it would always clog my filters up. i currently own 3 tanks and are all freshwater, and it has always been a dream of mine to have a saltwater tank.. Please help me thanks

This will be a 90 gallon tank

1. What type of filter should i use??
2. Do i have to use sand?? crushed coral?? read about crushed coral in the sticky and have read the effect it can have on the tank
Well those are my main concerns because i do not want the filters to get clogged by sand..

thanks guys

what we call sand in SW is larger than sand in FW it's like a small gravel

What type of filter should i use??
a canister would be nice, a good FX2 or 3

aragonite "sand" is best IMO, like you read CC can trap a bunch of crap, and cause water quality problems

thanks for replying I bought the one u mentioned BIGgourami aragonite kind which i love and looks really good..

and i decided to use my 2 aquaclear 110's for no until i can get a skimmer and wet dry trickle filter

Mr reef i will read this book u recommended thanks for your help.

One question My LFS is selling me a used wet dry trickle filter and a remora c protein skimmer for $300 installed with all the tubing and he will come out and install it for me. Is that a good price???

that's a nice deal for $300.00 can't beat that a free install and a wet/dry with the remora C which is a fantastic protein skimmer

good price, are you kidding! That is the BEST!!!

BTW< fake reefs conserve the enviroment and are pretty as well - cheaper.
