So a guy locally has some "freshwater jellyfish" that he pulled out of the river. They're are free. I know they're not real jellyfish but am curious as to if they are parasitic or would even last in aquaria. They are the size of a nickel right now.

No they will not last unless you can keep it cold. They also will not get much larger than that. If its the species I am thinking of. Very small, clear membrane with a white star in the very middle?

There are a lot of species, I have talked to a guy who collected one and kept them. They have an extremely short lifespan for the most part and finicky to say the least. I'll see if I can drag something up.

i haven't personally see them. I know they came out of the river so they would have to be coldwater but I'm curious as to exactly what they are.

ok so heres what i got:
They are called Craspedacusta sowerbyi officially. Grow maximum to the size of a quarter, feed off zooplankton and such. Damn finicky about temperature and conditions. No word of lifespan.

I'm surprised they could live in a river unless it has big, calm, warm pools. In my experience, they like it very warm. The one pond I collect them in locally, they don't turn into the medusa form until the water hits about 80 I believe. They definitely wouldn't survive in normal aquaria. Even a powerful sponge filter is too much for them. And even if they do well, don't expect more than maybe 8 weeks out of the longest lived individuals once they hit the medusa stage. Sometime I'd really like to see if I could collect some at the polyp stage and try to maintain them for a longer period of time, but it will be very challenging.

A few summers ago, I got about a dozen of them from a local pond. I kept them in a 10 gallon with a very weak sponge filter and got them feeding pretty well on live baby brine shrimp. Even then, most died in a month and the longest lived two lasted maybe 9 weeks. I've never seen them bigger than a nickel.

My company Jellyfish Art makes jellyfish aquariums and I'm interested to try keeping freshwater jellies in captivity. Does anyone know where I can collect some? I'm in northern California
