So I have this empty 30 gallon laying around and my lfs often gets this guys. I'm a huge brackish fan and want to know if these guys can be kept in that small of a tank.

Obviously I'll have a secure lid and a large power filter rated for 50 gallons. Specific gravity will never be below 1.005.

I've thought about the same thing too. From what I've seen and heard 30gal is acceptable for one adult specimen. Make sure there are plenty of hiding places (caves, PVC pipes, etc.). It is also a good idea to plant the tank with lots of salt tolerating plants

what is "specific gravity"?

has to do with salt content. measured with a hydrometer.

The easiest and most common instrument to measure the salt concentration in aquaria is the hydrometer. A hydrometer is a device that measures the density or specific gravity of a liquid. The more salt in the water the more dense it is.

yes, salt makes water denser, hence a specific gravity. more salt the denser the water. hydrometer measures water content, as in more salt less water as it is displaced by the salt content.

1 gallon of salt water weighs more than a gallon of pure water, specific gravity is the deference between the 2.
