I am ourchasing a 100 gallon and I was wondering what is better? Saltwater or Freshwater? If you could tell me which is better and why and some coolfish for the water type that would be great thanks

Neither are better over the other option. It is a matter of taste, how much you have to spend, and time to devote to the tank.

Fresh water is generally easier to keep. You could always start with a fresh water tank and convert to a saltwater tank. This is my advice as the fish are cheaper and so is start up cost. You can see how well you maintain the tank, keep up with water changes, and anything else to go along with keeping a tank. As for fish, http://www.liveaquaria.com/ is a good site to browse for fish. Youtube videos are also a good option. Visit your LFS and see which fish you like. Write down the name and do research on it and compatibility.

Depends if you want a; fowlr tank, reef tank, aquascaped tank, planted tank, predator tank, community tank, riparium, paludarium, biotope...

See what type of setup interests you most then start researching that area would be my advice....

It doesnt mattter what kind of salt you want...If you tank is not drilled and you do not have a sump DO NOT DO A SALT... Trust me...

I've never had a sump and have kept salt twice now. it is a complete myth that you need to have all the fancy equipment to set up salt. yes they all do help a lot with the general maintenance of the tank, but a dedicated aquarist could keep a salt water aquarium of many different sizes using all the same equipment as a freshwater tank.

Marine tanks cost a lot more to maintain and set up, if money is an option stay freshwater. there are plenty of exotic and exciting freshwater species. all you are really getting with marine is brighter colours and access to some interesting fish types unavailable in freshwater.

Marine tanks also need to be understocked compared to freshwater and you have to be a lot more careful about what you mix with what. if youre up for the challenge then go for it.
The choice is yours, just see which one realistically you will be happy with over a long period of time. I have known a few people to switch back from Marine because of the costs, or lack of fish in the tank etc. but still that doesn't mean you will feel this way, just think about the pros and cons first.
just don't expect to fit as many fish into a 100 gallon marine tank, as a 100 gallon freshwater tank.

Also for refference, I keep both salt and freshwater, just giving my own opinion.

I would say honestly, regardless if you go fresh or salt, both be expensive depending on the type of tank you want to setup and the type of equipment used etc... each has its budget forms, and each has its expensive forms...

I'm going to say just for arguments sake, a FOWLR tank would probably cost just a little bit more than a Freshwater tank with just fish... And a well setup Planted tank can cost almost as much as a reef tank...
