Thanks Hendre
yes they are from Australia inhabiting northern Queensland, although they can be found all over the word from Asia to Africa.
Microphis sp. (freshwater pipefish) are usually confused with the genus Dorichthys sp which are more brackish/saltwater, although it's thought Microphis need small amounts of salt for breeding, that doesn't explain the land locked specimens reproducing in full fresh.
Dorichthys spawn in brackish waters and the babies swim out to sea to grow up, when they are old enough they find their way back into the creeks and rivers to spawn and then repeat.
These fish only eat live food so we always make sure to have mosquito larvae, copepods and blackworms on hand, we have several rainbow ponds that act as a natural food source and scoop when we desire.
