I am setting up a 29 gallon fresh water refugeium for my 300 rift lake tank and am trying to find some good oxygen produceing plants to use to help raise oxygen levels in the main tank .The problem is I dont know many that can handle a ph of 8.4?? I was thinking of using hornwart but you cannot buy it here I dont think But their is a ton of it in a near by lake?? What do you think???What are some other kinds that would do well??

Several different species of Vallisneria can be maintained in high pH and high salinity environments. Anubias nana can also thrive.

As far as using plants to increase overall DO, you'll need to run the refugium lights 24/7 to do this. The night cycle of plants causes them to absorb nearly as much oxygen as they've produced during a day of photosynthesis.

You'd be better off using a good protein skimmer to aerate the water prior to release back to the tank. A good micro-bubble venturi valve and a decent sized reaction chamber (for longer air/water contact [or dwell time]) will be a more consistent method of oxygenating water than a refugium on a system with a heavy bio-load.And, it'll prove to be much cheaper to run than any system requiring strong plant lighting 24/7 and bulb replacements.

A protein skimmer on fw ? This is an african cichlid tank . I have a nano reef with a proteinskimmer but have not tried one on a fresh water tank.I was also thinking this refugeium would be good for aditional filtration in a biological sense and double for a hospital for fish that may get beat up( I can shut off the flow from the sump to this tank and hook up a hob if needed to medicate.

i heard protean scimers dodn't even work in FW

they won't foam and remove waste on freshwater but will add more oxygen to your water....

I never said you'd be using it on FW for skimming. I said it would be used for increased aeration.

BTW, there are protein skimmers that work on FW setups. Just be ready to spend a few thousand $ for the industrial grade venturi valve(s) and large size dwell chambers/pumps.

I have an extra skimmer laying around but now what to do with this xtra 29 gallons need somthing (plant wise ) to put in here mabye african swords.I need to use it for aditional filtration as well as oxygenation.
