Freshwater refugium sump with media tray

No experience in this area, but maybe listing the tank sizes and what size tank this will be used on will give people a better idea?
 
Oh yeah forgot, but I just want to know do people do do a region tank with Bio media

I've got something like this going on, although not sure if it's exactly what you're trying to do.

In the area below the bio balls I've now got a bunch of marimos and java fern, and a colony of japonica shrimp working as a cleanup crew. Of course I don't run carbon on this because it would stymie plant growth.
