Hey MFK, so i'm cycling my 55 gal at my house right now in preparation for me coming home from college. A week ago i put in pfs (pool filter sand) and started the filter. This week i went back and noticed that the sand bed was a lot deeper than i meant it to be. Its about 3.5 inches deep and i'm kinda worried about the whole noxious build-up thing.

i will have pond and ramshorn snails(already in), at least one young bichir who should burrow, american cichlids who like to dig the top layers and will be sifting the sands with 20% water changes every day or two (going through the sand with the siphon). I'll also have a few anubias, hornwort, anacharis, and java ferns.

I've heard that this pfs is able to avoid this because it doesn't pack down, is this true? or should i try to take some out.

Just rake through once a week or so and there won't be any worry of anaerobic bacterial buildup or noxious gas pockets

would the siphoning count as raking through it? or would i need to pretty much turn the whole sand bed over?
