I've heard that feeding Freshwater shrimps (live or frozen) can or will enhance the redness of an arowana. I've been feeding the shrimps live to my aro (with the horn cut off) unshelled eversince i bought him. The shell has caratenoids or something that induces color pigmentation. So far, i don't notice the effects but the redness is coming out naturally since the aro is getting older. Does anyone feed their red aros shrimps, any suggestions or comments?

My aro has a staple of market shrimp. I feed it along with the shell. It does wonders to both my jardini and silver aros. Even their wastes are pinkish in color.

Even my NGT and IT are getting a tinge of redness with a staple of shrimps.

How much do you buy your market shrimps?

Before xmas, i got it for 55-75 for a half kilo. Now it's around 100 per half. A much cheaper price to pay if you compare it to expensive feeder fish ...

i use it every day on my aro and rays. The shell is the key to getting the enhanced red color..it is the carotenoid that gives that color and its primarily found on the shell.

I noticed the effect best on my motoro.. ive been feeding her de -shelled shrimps for years and i tried giving her shrimps w /shells this time. The spots turned more orange after a week.. it used to be drab.

That is very very true! just remove the sharp part like the head and tail. Anything else is edible...

My NGT and Indo Tigers have this great reddish hue already ...

ah ok. I agree with you. I should try buying market shrimps instead of buying the live ones from the LFS. They sell it per piece depending on the size. Quite expensive too. How stupid of me  but i just drop the live shrimps into the tank and if my red gets hungry he'll just scoop up a few.

Best of all, you can just stock it in ur freezer, and your mom/wife wont bug you abt it ...

You can also feed de-shelled shrimps to bichirs and large cichlids. :)
