I am going to be getting a FW stingray next Wednesday (Aug 5th) and I want to have sand in the tank. What type of sand should I use and are there any type of decorations I can put in with it?

My current setup with one motoro has Tahitian (not sure on spelling) moon sand with about palm sized rocks sparsely throughout the tank. I used the more expensive sand, because I figure why cheap out on an expensive ray? Good luck!

Since your question concerning sand has been answered I would like to address the "decoration" question.

I have had unlimited success using root balls, driftwood, etc in my ray tanks. The success is due to the fact that I suspend the wood from monofilament and do not allow it to touch the substrate. The rays have access to every square inch of the bottom while smaller fish and plants cling to the suspended wood. No dead spots form, water flow is unimpeded, no food goes uneaten.

Respectfully,
FireMedic.

Im fairly new to MFK but i have dealt with stingrays alot I like to use estees marine sand it wont bother your ph levels and it comes in many different colors

Swimming pool filter sand, is probably the best cheapest way to go ($8 50 lbs). Black 3M Color Quartz is what I use ($20 50 lbs.). I have Tahitian Moon in a 30 Gal, very nice sand but $20 16 lbs.

There are some options for you to mull over. I would not recommend any type of silica sand due to it's abrasive nature and it can cause irritation to the rays.
