is a freshwater sump built the same way as a saltwater. ive reaserched many sumps for saltwater im just curious if i could build one the same way.
i had a 20 gall siting around and im setting it up as a sump for my 55

any suggestions for return pumps i was thinking anything eheim as im a eheim junky.

Yeah, you set it up the same. I used a FW sump on my RTC's temporary home until the pond was built. It supported a 16 inch RTC in a 125 gallon tank very well, so I'd say this is a great choice, especially if you're looking for filtration in a heavily-stocked tank. As for pumps, I'd say Marineland, but then I'm a Marineland junkie. :D

Thanks alot i plan on using eheim subsrate in one chamber and somthing to poilsh in the other oh and a filter sock any other suggestions

i have an eheim canister rated for 160 gallons, 2 hob filters rated for 60-80 gallons

We used a lot of fine-grade filter pad, and we bought it in big sheets and just cut it to fit the chambers in the sump. It's cheap to buy that way, and after it gets too dirty to keep washing, you can just toss it. Also, I did not use scrubbies in this sump, but currently use them in several of my canister filters. They're cheap and work really well for providing space for bio.

Well, they do the same thing -- provide surface area for bacteria to grow. Scrubbies just cost a lot less!

If you only use one, it's only going to turn the tank's volume over four times per hour, and that's not a whole lot. I'd aim for one that will minimally turn the tank's volume over six times per hour, and even up to ten times.

Oh I think it would be fine if you used in addition to the other filters and only used one return pump.
