i have a freshwater tank that keeping a green spotted puffer, i just added salt to the tank and now the sg is 1.010. i was told that the gsp have to go full marine so i m now tryin to setup a full marine system for it. my question is can i just add salt to make it full marine SG or i have to dump all the freshwater and fill up new water and mix with salt? i still have to go thought the n cycle even i add salt to my freshwater setup?

You'll want to slowly acclimate it to the higher SG, so you can just replace a gallon of the current water with a gallon of saltwater of the goal SG every few days until you hit your goal SG. You can do it quicker, but the goal is to try to avoid starting a huge new cycle in favor of letting the saltwater BB take over for the freshwater BB as they die off.

Also, be sure to use a high quality marine salt mix rather than just plain table salt.

so add salt to adjust the SG every few days, like 3 days? i m planning to get instant ocean sea salt. the SG in my tank now is 1.010 and my goal is 1.025 cuz i m planning to put some liverock in the tank.

How big of a tank is it? You might be able to do more than 1 gallon at a time if the tank is big enough. Every other day would work fine. Is the LR you plan to put in the tank already established? If it isnt youll have die off and it will restart the cycle and might have an ammonia spike that goes high enough to cause harm to your puffer.

you can do it every 3 days thats fine. I did the same thing with a green congo in a 10g before moving it to a 75g full salt :D

trust me, you cannot kill them fish with conventional weapons.....that thing had to be the most hardiest of fish I have ever owned. after 5 months, I donated it back to the LFS this weekend. great fish, but just way too curious and eats everything if can get its mouth on....I am starting to bring in more $$ stock to my 135g and did not want that congo destroying it...lol

the puffer is in a 5g now but tonite i gonna move it into a 25g, for the LR i gonna buy the ones that ar ready to put into tank. so how many gallon i can change it to marine in every few days? oh and i gonna stock some demsel in the tank too.

I would probably put 2 or 3 gallons of sw with a sg of 1.025 in the 25 gal and then put the 5 gallons of water that the gsp is in in the 25 gallon aswell and then fill the rest of the tank up with 1.010sg water. Then I would do 1 or 2 gallons of 1.025sg water changes every 2 or 3 days. He should be fine if you do that.

if your not looking to do corals which obviously you wont sense they would be a snack I suggest running your salinity at 1.021-1.020 instead of .025 That high of salinity is good for coral but not so much fish. it actually stresses their kidneys and makes them much more susceptible to ick.

I have never heard that before, I dont know how much truth there is to it. I know some people run their QT tanks with lower salinity, but fish should be at 1.021-1.025.

yeah salt tanks, even fish only, need to be 1.021-1.025. corals and inverts 1.025-1.026

1.024 is perfect for fish only in my opinion
