Hey all,

I just found my Freddy on the floor dead. Apparently he jumped out. There are no aggressors (towards him) and the water is fine. I haven't seen him jump before, even when feeding. Are they known to jump? Any reason you guys can think of why he would jump out?

It's a very sad day :( (except it's made up for by celebrating my wife's happy mother's day)

First off, sorry for your loss. I lost a couple of good fishes way back due to lack of a good lid. Get a good lid ASAP so you don't go through the hassle of losing another. Why take a chance?

As to why he jumped out, there probably is no clear answer. Sometimes they may be going after prey (fly, insect, etc.). Sometimes they may be chased. I had a giant jag and a giant oscar, both 14" or so jump out at the same time. I thought someone was breaking in the house. Only because it was so loud were they saved. After that and losing two others, I learned the hard way the importance of a good lid.

The bottom line is learn from your mistakes so you don't repeat them.

My freddy hits the canopy of my tank every time there is an inscet on it. The first time I heard it I couldnt figure out what was going on, he kept repeatedly hitting the lid of the tank then I looked and saw an ant crawling across the glass.

I'm getting ready to start up a 55 gallon over the weekend. I will also get cichilds...which type...IDK but I'm looking really hard. How can you prevent this from happening, I will be upset if this happen as well. I will be going to the Petco/Petsmart and check out there tanks. I also found some one on craigslist that are selling 2 inch Convit Cichilds for a $1.00 a piece. Any advice from anyone will be greatly appreciated.

Is this your first time with cichlids? What do you want out of them? Are you looking to breed them or just watch them? Give me some answers and I might be able to help you pick whats right for you.

You need a good lid for the top of the tank. I have glass tops on mine as do alot of other people, some also have canopies that go over the tops of their tanks to hide lights and such, it just depends on your vision as of what looks good.

sorry for the hijack lets get back to the thread

Thanks all, for the comments. I guess it could have been a fly or something. Just really sucks because there is only a small area (by the filter) that is open. The rest of the top is covered. He literally had a 1.5" by maybe 6" area where he could have jumped out! That's what upsets me the most, is that the odds of him dying that way are/were so slim!

He was just getting his colors, too.
