I would love to buy a puffer for my 125, but all of them I have seen are described as too aggressive for my stock. I have a clown knife, a brown knife, several angels, rainbow shark, id shark, tire track eel, and two pleco. Are there any species that you know of that would be compatible? I wouldn't mind moving fish around to different tanks if I must.

Unfortunately there isnt any puffer out there that won't at the very least try and nip a lot of your other tankmates if given the chance...

The least aggressive puffer is normally considered the south american puffer, SAP, but as i said they will still likely try and nip other tankmates, and require regular dentistry...

Hmm. Okay. I have an empty 55 right now, would a SAP do okay with african cichlids? I have considered cichlids for a while and would likely get some if I know they are compatible with a puffer. What else would they work with and what do you mean by dentistry?

Not sure if they would get stressed out or picked on by the chichlids to be honest... Although in a 55G you might be able to pull off a trio of them along with some small fast moving dithers in a planted tank?

As for dentistry, SAP's are known to have freakishly fast growing teeth which even on a constant hard shell diet can still require manual teeth trimming...

You can check the sticky out in this section which goes into detail about that...

Hmm okay, I wouldn't want to stress him out so I will skip the cichlids then. Okay. I will do some additional research on SAPs and consider it. Any other kinds that would fit in a 55 and not require dentistry? What do you think of figure 8's and leopards? I saw some today at the lfs and was very tempted to buy one but I knew I couldn't house him.

F8's are light brackish so not ideal for planted tanks, leopards i take it are green spotted puffer, in which they require brackish to almost marine conditions as they age...

Other smaller options could include c.irrubessco or the dwarf puffer?

Cool okay. I didn't want to do brackish so if anything prob dwarf. Thank you for your help!

No worries, since a lot of LFS' will label GSP's and F8's as freshwater species when they actually are not...

If you go with dwarf puffers try and get a mix of 2 to 3 females per 1 male

Yo you have a clown knife so im guessing a substantial tank upgrade will be planned soon enough? If a future tank is big enough to house an adult clown knife id say it should be big enough for an mbu, its hit and miss as with any fish but on the whole they are the most peaceful of the puffers! The 125 will not be big enough tho, not even for your current stock, clown knifes get huuuuge, true monsters!
