On March 16, 2012 I bought 5 small managuense, each between 1”-2”, in hopes of raising a male. Shortly after, The number dwindled down to my one male. At the time, I was constantly posting pics of him, asking everyone to sex him so I was sure, and comparing him to everyone else’s managuense. I had hopes for him to be a big Hoss. I kept up with water changes, fed him regularly, and saw him grow before my eyes. A few days ago I moved him into my new house, and got the opportunity to measure him. He measured 15 and 7/8 inches. It’s crazy to see a tiny fish grow into something so prized. When I got him, I was still pretty new to the hobby. To anyone who comes on here who’s new, just know it’s so rewarding to see the transformation, and gaining the knowledge to take care of such fragile animals and keeping them alive and thriving is awesome.

Above are some photos of my Managuense, which are completely out of order. Feel free, if you own or have owned one, to post photos of yours.

The top pic is him now great job raising him.

LOVE that fine black/white pattern in the top picture. Where did you get him? Do you know where he, or his ancestors, come from? He's not Honduran, I'd guess he's from Lake Nicaragua? Sound right?

Very impressive indeed. I'd like to do something like this one day, my concern is I'd get bored with just one fish and let maintainance slide. Did you ever have issues lie, that or were you into it the whole 5 years?

There were a few occasions I tried to put fish in with him just because I had an urge to buy fish. They got moved out and put in a different tank almost immediately though, as he would attack them. I had a female motoguense in with him for several months that he never attacked, but she got some sort of swim bladder issue and couldn’t swim or eat anymore.

As for dedication, there were times life got in the way and I just didn’t have time to clean the tank. Had some issues with over feeding and he had some health problems because of it, but I could tell when he wasn’t acting right, and even if I didn’t have time to fully treat the tank, a good water change and some aquarium salt always fixed the issue.

I’m not sure to be honest, he’s from the much saught after location of Jack’s Aquarium and Pets. The one that used to be by my house had some local fish breeders that would trade Jack’s their fry for some of their in-stock fish.
