Well bad new our copper banded butterfly fish has gone missing our best theory is that he jumped out and our cats ate him since one of the cats got sick today and they were both fighting last night this is what we figure since there is no sign of him anywhere in or out of the water.

Then while investigating for the missing fish I found that we have baby shrimp.
Baby cleaner shrimp so I was wondering what I can do for them to increase the survival rate they have a huge green moss like plant that they are living in I used some dried flake food and crushed it into powder hoping they could use some of it What does anyone suggest?

as long as nothing in your tank can eat them your chances should be pretty good. if you have a refugium put 'em in there. make sure you keep target feeding them so they get enough ton eat,and if your iodine and calcium levels are good they should be moulting and growing soon.

Thanks for the info yes they could be eaten we will have a sump soon so I think I could make an area for them in it or something until they I just hope they will be smart enough to hide in the plant if that won't happen I suppose I could try a smaller tank but then that may be just as risky with keeping it balanced so we will see thanks again There is a bit of hope

Are there male and female shrimp or are they like clown fish and change sex. I would like to get another cleaner shrimp and mate them as well. Any way to tell sex or not. Thanks
E

How long has your tank been set up ?? Sounds to me like you have baby copods, because their living in a plant, probably chaeto, baby shrimp are very very tiny and clear and float around for about three days, by this time what ever wasn't eaten if any, will live on your substrate and be very hard to see.

I have bred and raised skunk cleaners, banded coral and cardinal / blood red shrimp. In the typical aquarium setting, the babies would not likley survive due to either being eaten by fish or the filter sucking them up. Are you certain these are not mysis or a similar copapod? That seems much more probable.

What kind of shrimp are you keeping?

Joel

Yes they are male and female I am not positive on how they are sexed with my african Fan Shrimp (Freshwater) The Males are Larger and they have bigger legs. The only sure way I know of is the Female holds her eggs in her swimmers and if she has them then she is A Female

It is possible they could be some other kind of shrimp although my female is carrying eggs and I have about 4 different sizes today. They are growing fast

Well I do not know for sure how these shrimp are but I do know that some kinds have babies that are larva (the floating kind) and then some have little miniature versions of the parents these are defiantly shrimp they look just like little shrimp.

I only have the cleaner shrimp Lysmata amboinensis. I do feed frozen Mysis shrimp

Well the sad news is that maybe all the doubters were right and they are Mysis shrimp or somthing because I just found that both of my shrimp in that tank are carrying eggs so I am not sure if the babies could be theirs When are the eggs fertilized by the male? I figure it must be at this point or is it more early on? I have decided to move our other two cleaner shrimp into the tank with the two females since they do not have eggs so maybe one of them is a male We will see any suggestions or comments appreciated Thanks

Wow thanks so much Guppy so the info about being male and female is wrong that I had said before this is what that first site stated
"Cleaner shrimp are hermaphroditic spawners and all members of a mature group produce eggs which are fertilized by another egg producing member within the group."

Cool SO I don't need to move any shrimp and I may still have Cleaner Shrimp fry WHOO!!

Back to being positive!! :grinno:
