From gravel to sand (fresh water)

Yes I've done it countless times. With fish I'm the tank it'll be fine, I've used a smaller bucket to place the sand on the bottom rather than just dumping it all in at once makes less of a mess (not much less) and watch to make sure filters are off and I suggest running just a sponge filter for a couple hours if you can. With play sand rrinse rinse rinse rinse and rinse then after rinsing rinse.

My fish life is sparked up with Polys :)

Is play sand that dirty?

Most sands will be dirty regardless because of all the rubbing causing a lot of fine particles in the bag and sand...

Rinisng it thouroughly the first time around will save you a crap load of headaches later on...

But once settled, sand bottoms imo are the nicest...

I ve done this on several tanks but used PFS. I bought a metal kitty litter scoop at Petsmart, the one with the slots in it and scoop the gravel out and water drains though the slots. Took less then 30 minutes to pull the gravel in each tank...

I hear play sand can be a little dirty, so Id definitely rinse it first....

Yah, rinse play sand. I use sand in my tank and have lot's of plant matter in there, also some pieces of wood I added. The combined bits of wood that falls off plus the degenerated plant matter makes the bottom of the tank very 'natural', which I really like. It's like diving into the middle of a shallow lake somewhere. :))

Play sand can be dusty, but the main problem with play sand is it is very light and has fine grains that are easily stirred up. These fine grains can flow freely with the current in the water column and get into your filters, and ruin impellers. The reason many fish keepers prefer pool filter sand, is it is heavier and the grains are a little larger thus, can not get in and ruin filters as easily.

I have play sand in one tank and soft building sand in the other two. I much prefer the soft building sand as it is slightly more coarse and doesn't clog yhe filter or compact down as much
