Hey, there is a spotted gar (believe it is anyway) at my LFS that the entire front half of the fish is almost pitch black, towards the rear though it fades out lighter and you can see the spots. Even the bill/snout is pitch black. Is that normal coloration? It looks like an attractive fish for sure...

hey what's up! regarding the fish at your LFS, it could very likely be a spawning period change as many gars will change around the spring through summer in terms of their pattern. sometimes the pattern difference sticks, sometimes they revert back to a more 'normal' pattern after the spawning/summer season is over with. if you're interested go for it, but just keep in mind that the pattern may change (if they aren't charging any more than normal for the fish, however, it could be a cool fish to keep)! best of luck!
