From velvet to eggs!

So I had a bad case of velvet in my tank a week ago, but I cured all the fish(lost a few due to it) and I thought I maybe lost my large female fire mouth because I hadn't seen her In awhile, found her in a log and thought she might be sick, but after watching her become very aggressive to anything near it, I looked inside and found TONS of eggs, they look fertilized even though the male fire mouth Isnt helping with the eggs at all (she kicks him out if he gets close) so is it common for only the female to tend to the eggs with new world cichlids?

Sorry about the velvet but congratulations on the eggs! In my opinion it is normal for the female to "encourage" the male to patrol the perimeter of their territory rather than guard the eggs.

Yeah that could be, I noticed her lack of presence when the smaller male starte strutting aroun the tank as top dog, so I thought something happened to the female who normally is top dog, which is why I thought something was wrong with her, but nope, just guarding her eggs!
