I just bought a 125 gallon tank.and i want to set it up for a frontosa colony, how many frontosas should i get to have a nice colony, and does anyone know where i could buy the colony of them,i would really like to do the mpwe frontosa type......please reply;)

Hey Jack, I'd go to Jay's Aquatics he's got a bunch of them about 2-3 in what size were you thinking of getting and what type?

wow kristi what a pic,i have to go there (jays aquatics) i just asked ned to get me a quoteon the mpwe beacause i think they are the most colorful of the frontosa species

I think that I'm going to get some mpimbwe just to try them out. I have some Moba and 10 or so Burundi. I like all Fronts. Probably my favorite group of fish. Followed closely by CA cichlids. GL

I would plan on having 6 to 8 in a six foot tank after you weed out extra males. Plan on 1 or 2 males and the rest females. Try to have them come from different sources too ( if you can ) so your not breeding brothers and sisters. It will take a while to be able to tell the males, you will have to vent them since males and females look the same. Fronts are slow growers compared to other cichlids and they also usually need to be kept species only if you have a colony that you want to breed. THey also will look better if they are species only since they get what are called trailers (fin extenstions) that other fish will often nip off..

I think 5 at most, one male and 4 females, a 125 is not a huge tank. No need to buy a huge group fronts will breed when the time is right, they do not pair off with any particular fish.

you can start out with like 20 or so, and start selling them as they grow. frontosa will always be easy to sell.
agreed
