Hey Guys,

A friend of mine currently has a colony of 7 Bar Frontosa (2M, 8F, 11?) in a 6x2x2, that is built into a wall with a 4x2x1.5 foot sump. The biggest is about 11 inches, the smallest 7 inches, as well as 11x 2-3 inch fry. They have been in this tank for an unknown number of years.

In 7 weeks my friend will be moving to the UK and has no way of taking the Fronts with him. I have been told I can have them for free if I can get a suitably sized tank.:)
I want to know what size tank I would need to keep the Fronts happy? I am thinking of getting a 8x3.5x3.5 or a 10x3x3, which one?
What kind filtration should I employ with either tank?
How should i go about transporting the Fronts, it is a 2 hour trip by car.

Any other tips?

WOW. A 10x3x3 tank is huge ! I would get that [though it's more than you need!!, could always add extra fish]. With a tank this big, you mind as well go sump (probably get at least a 125 gal. I don't know much about sumps though). OR get like 10 canister filters lol !

As for the transportation, just bag em up and make sure they can't spill over. They should be ok for a couple hours. Make sure their new home is ready for them by the time you get them home (cycled etc...).

Good luck !!!!! :headbang2:headbang2

Either tank would be fine, you could keep them in much smaller. Usually the recommended tank size for a front colony is around 150. You would have room for some tank-mates in both. As for filtration, building (or buying) a sump or several canister filters would probably be the best options.

I would put them in a cooler, with water filled to about 1-2'' above their height.

GL and don't forget to post some pix of the frontosa when you get them :headbang2

That will look awesome, love a big tank with a large colony of fronts!
Heres an article on fishless cycling, dosing the tank with pure ammonia.Speed up the process with some material from the tank they are already in.Even better if he will give you the all the biomedia from the current filter to put in your filter.

Not to hijack the thread but what is a good size tank for a colony of fronts?
