Im fairly new 2 this site, however ive been keeping fish (fresh and salt) for years. I have an "issue" that im not familiar with, and hoping sumbody out there can help. Just bought the most beautiful true deep purple male Frontosa ive EVER seen!! Usually a good thing.... He eats and looks fine, however, he bobs up and down at the surface of the water with his dorsal and 4head OUT of the water. ?!!? He will go deeper from time 2 time, but spends 98% of his time like this at the surface. Any suggestions? Solutions? Causes? ANYTHING?? lol Thanx 4 your help MFK army!!!! :) Thad

im sorry to hear about that i love fronts
bump

i once read that if ammonia levels are high in the tank the fish will swim closer and closer to the surface of the water no idea why i just read it in one of my older test kits, maybe that will help

yeah check your water params and let us know what they are, also how oxygenated is your tank? one time when i hadn't cleaned my filter out and the flow slowed, i saw all of my fish were staying towards the top at an angle with their heads towards the surface and would go up above the surface as well to get air, but once i cleaned the filter and the flow returned to normal, moving the surface like it should then they returned to normal within 30min, sorry about your loss fronts are great fish

Sounds like float... What were you feeding him? If it was floating food or something that he was eating from the surface they will inhale air and will have a difficult time passing it.

Now some say that this only applys to wild caught fish that are brought up to fast, and that we no longer have the issue, but I hear of cases like yours and it leads me to believe otherwise.

Thanx 2 all 4 the kind words and the advice. My water params r good and its well oxygenated. I have a few other fish and they r just hunky-dory. He would just swim real slow at the surface with his dorsal and 4head out of the water. Wuz a beautiful deep purple. Bums me right the F#&! out :( Thanx again 2 everybody!!

like mike said its bloat.
for the next time.. thers a proces tu eliminate this with frontosas where u extract the air with a needle. look more info on this
dont give up in this gorgeous fish

I would luv 2 hear more about the "deflating" issue. Id luv 2 buy more Fronts and hate 2 run into it again :( Id always thought puncturing the swim bladder would b a death sentence. I have noticed a similar problem with the occsional pond comet in outdoor applications.... They never last long :( Thanx again MFK
