Hallo,

I have been keeping rifts for number of years, (lamprologus, tropheus etc) and I want to up my game, I want set up an 8ftx2ftx2ft fish tank for cyphotilapia frontosa and am thinking that my filtration should consist of 2 x Eheim Professional 3e 2078 external powerfilters - is this overkill. Also for a tank this size how many can I get and grow on to adulthood?

The filteration seem to be fine. In a 240 Gallon, you can probably keep a colony of 9 - 10... adult

you probably want op change this subject to a different section

Howdy,

Have you considered an Eheim 2262?

Filtration looks like pleanty to me. One would not be enough but two seems overkill. I would populate with 2 or 3 males to around 14 females. Or if you are buying them at only a couple inches to grow them out in that tank I would get around 30 and as you can identify the sex sell most of the males to the LFS as they get larger. That is what I did with my first two colonies since I was not willing to pay for adult frontosa plus I did not want to be adding adult fish to an established colony. That way they all grew up together and I have pretty much zero aggression issues. The only thing I regret was only keeping 1 male in each tank. I am always worried that something is going to happen to the single male and then having to find a quality male to replace him.

Hi Guys

thanks for your input, apologies for placing my enquiry in the wrong srction - this is the first time that I have input anything on a forum. I checked out the Eheim 2262 but they don't appear to be available in the U.K., however I did find that I could get a hold of the Eheim 2260 which appears to be just the ticket - thanks.
Regarding the numbers of fish to start up with, again thanks becuase I wasn't sure if I could have more than one male in the tank.
I hope to get the setup strated soon and will let you know how it goes.

I did see on Aquarist Classifieds yesterday that someone was selling a 2260 very cheap (without media). Worth a look ;)

Why not use an FX5 - I have not used this Eheim(have got the smaller Eheim Ecco) but have been a big fan of the FX5 for a while now. Also you might get away with just 1 filter on the tank. I use a single FX5 on a 180gallon and it keeps the water crystal if it's set up correct.

Yes. I have the intake at the end of the tank directly above the FX5 unit and the output pipe travells the 6 foot to the opposite side. Where the water re-enters the tank I also have a powerhead mounted on an uplift from 3 u/g filter plates (this is just to hold the powerhead and it also supplies slight extra filtration). The power head pushes the current back towards the intake end. I haven't done this, but you can also remove the baskets from the FX5 and fill it with extra media that will increase fltration if layered correctly.

I am not saying that this is the correct setup but it works for me.

Thanks for the headsup on the Eheim 2260 on Aquarist classified unfortuntately it's long gone - never mind. Regarding using an FX5 I've heard too much negative press and I think I will stick with the idea of filtering with Eheim.
