In my experience. Play sand (whitish yellow) and a black background. Or black sand and blue background. Depending on what shade of blue your looking for. Dont forget the lighting very important also.

I'd go with black sand, I used black sandblasting sand and it makes my blue cichlids color pop!

lED lights or philips natural light. I believe the best lighting for price and effectiveness would probably be Zoo Meds Reef Suns 50/50 bulbs really brings out the blues.

Best would be from petco. Your total will be like $21.50 for a 48". Must order online as it is in the warehouse.

Black substrate with a black background cause Frontosa to become more black in color and you lose the great blue that Mpimbwe fronts are known for.

I would only go one in black, either the back or sand not both.
