I just set up a tank for some frontosa, and was wondering if I could get some limestone from a road cut for the tank? I live near plenty of road cuts in southern TN and was wondering if I could just get some rock from there. I have never kept Africans before and have never been able to do such with the SA's that I usually keep. What do you guys think?

Yes, you can use limestone rock with fronts. It helps buffer the Ph.
Btw, what's a "road cut"? I've never heard of that term before....:grinno:

I think he means the large cuts that highways follow through hilly areas. Rather than increase the grade to build the highways over a hill, they cut the hill and dig out the rock.

I don't think there's anything wrong with grabbing some rocks from the countyside. As long as the rocks don't belong to anyone. Although you can get much better (usually) rock from a landscaping store or a stone quarry. Look for business that install ponds, too.

Sorry, I guess that is a southern term. Yes, the places where they blast base rock to make a flat road instead of going over a hill. In TN and KY there are thousands of them into limestone cliffs. I know where there are some newer ones, i.e. limiting the runoff. I know it wont eliminate it completely, but should minimize it. But even from a landscape store, you dont know where the rock came from and who knows what it could have been exposed to, correct?

I would just try to get them from a slightly elivated area where the water would not have been pooling on the rocks, that should be fine. I used to live outside clarksville tn (woodlawn area by ky border) it was a beautiful area.

To my understanding you just want to try and avoid man made rock.?

i know what kind of rocks ur talking about i think, i did the same thing. but mines were far from any grassy landscaped area where they might have been sprayed with chemicals or anything. they were on a dirt road on the side of a canal so i was confident that they were fine. I still washed them and poured boiling water just in case. they have been in my tank for a few months now and i have seen no shifts in any params.:)
