Im thinking about getting a frontosa, for my 75 gallon or maybe a pair for my 75 gallon. My question is.do frontosa grow quick like american cichlids or are their growth rates slower paced.

Very slow growing fish. If you get any either get one, or many. Getting only two could turn out to be a bad thing.

They are slow growing fish and get a group instead of a pair if you don't want just one. That tank would be a nice growout for a while, but wouldn't be good for a lifetime.

it takes a few years for them to grow to about 6-7 inches... although some are faster and some are even slower...consider them very slow growing.. and thats why they are expensive...harder to breed and longer wait to maturity.

super slow growers. go with a group of 12.

better start on the right track....if you're housing them in 75gal
i suggest you put 16pcs this way there is a better chance that you will have pairs and once you determine the pairs you can transfer the other fronts to another tank because once they pair up they will look for a territory and sometimes that maybe trouble some for the other fronts. And mind you they are slow growers compared to other cichlids so you have to be patient when it comes to frontosa keeping...hope this helps!

I grew my 8 fronts out in a 55 gal for several months. They grew very well. I have moved them to a 125 gal. A 6 foot tank is always better for them. They grew really slow, except for 2 and they took off really fast.

If you had 6 to 8 fronts in a 4 foot (55 or 75 gallon) they could be comfortable in there for about 6-8 months if you get them at about 1.5 inches long. During that time you will likely have one or two that will grow faster than tankmates and be very dominant and aggressive, that will be the alpha and beta males (not 100 percent but most commonly found). After that time you will need to house them in 6 foot tank or larger, especially the more you have . I had 6 burundi fronts growing out in a 6 foot 125 and the alpha was tearing them up , moved them to a 7 foot tank and its much better now. (I still have one or two that have fin damage from that time, likely will have it forever) Fronts are aggressive to each other but wimps with other species of fish so keep them species only unless you can watch them closely and make changes when needed.

Well said everyone. My colony is 7 Mobas in a 265 gallon tank. My 2 large males have put on almost an inch in size in a month and a half so they are growing quite well while the other 5 have put on maybe 3/4 of an inch in that same time. Definately better to breed in a colony like Mike said.
