Leave it to me to post first in here :grinyes:

If you kept Frontosa's in say 180gal tank, how many could you keep? Then what do most of you keep with your Front's?? I keep mine with some parrots a ram, and bumble be cat and a whiptail, but was wondering if the front is bigger can you put them in with the more agressive africans? (I've seen it done but then it always hides) ??

I keep mine in a 125 gall with catfishes, and other cichlids, and no one bothers each other

I have a breedding group of 6 fronts in a 125, with clown loaches and a bichir as the cleanup crew.

6 Fronts in a 130 with 3 Clown loaches.

Yeah six to eight fronts should be good for that tank certainly no more than 10 IMO.

Most Fronts won't do well with aggressive fish. I agree, max of 10 full grown. If you are buying them small then put 20 in there.

If you don't want your colony to breed then you have 2 options:

1) Female only tank. They are usually smaller 8-12" and you can keep a few more in the tank. Get a large group if they are small and remove the males as they grow.

2) Male only tank. They get huge up to 16" depending on the species you get. Of course you won't be able to have as many. About 3 less than a female only tank. Get a large group if they are small and remove the females as they grow.

If you want them to breed then I would remove the males as they grow or trade all your males for a few wild caught males (or what ever they have) and sit back and let them do their thing.

My buddy has 8 fronts 5-8" in a 150 gallon tank 5' x 2' x 2' and they are breeding for him. He said he will get a bigger tank when he sells some fry.

Good luck Ash. Not sure if this helps you or not.

In a 180 you could keep 10 adult Fronts. If you want to keep other fish as well, you'll have to bring down the numbers.

As already mentioned, Clown Loaches make great tankmates. Some other Cichlids that do well are Altolamp. Compressiceps and Calvus, Cyrtocara Moorii, Placidochromis Phenochilus, and many others. Alot of fish will work well with Fronts, they just can't be too aggressive.

And if they are too small.....

Hope this helps
