So for about 2 weeks now, I've been feeding my oscars frozen shrimp. Yesterday my dad posed the question of "If they're frozen, will the fish be able to digest them properly?" So I figured I'd bring the question to the experts. Is it ok to be feeding my fish frozen food? Or should I thaw it out to insure better digestion?

i have always heard to thaw it.. i am by no means an expert but my 75gal community tank (for now) has an oscar in it and i feed him pellets bloodworms mysis shrimp and frozen veggie stuff but i always thaw it completely first.. i have had some fish that wont even eat the food unless its thawed..

Well they have no problem eating it. And seem to be doing fine. But I was just checking to see if it was of any harm to the fish.

I'm interested to hear other people's opinions. I just assumed everyone else just thawed their food. I always thaw frozen food to ensure it gets digested.

I'm sure the shrimp will thaw plenty quick once the Oscar eats it. I always thaw mine but that's only because I use squished-dry shrimp to soak in their vitamins. I dont thaw the frozen bloodworm cubes unless I'm putting them in for all the fish and not just the Oscar since he snatches the whole cube right away.

If we thaw bloodworms or brine shrimp... it falls into thousands of pieces... not a good approach when feeding big fish... but works great for small fish!

I've fed dozens if not hundreds of chunks of frozen food to adult Oscars with no apparent ill effects. Maybe a hint of brain freeze but nothing I'd worry about...

It will definitely thaw in the fish's gut allowing it to be fully digested. Some concern of this lowering the fish's core temperature may be valid, but as mentioned, I've never seen any ill effect...

I feed frozen all of the time. I always, ALWAYS thaw it out though. I have an old coffee cup that I put the frozen cubes in then I put the cup in a bowl of hot water. Leave sit for about 20 mins and its usually thawed out.

Would you eat a frozen dinner??
