So I have switched my 15 inch Alligator gar to thawed shrimp and tilapia strips but when I went to my LPS they told me not to feed my gar that because he is only eating it because he is starving. So he told me to feed it roseys but they are so small and it would be a snack and they would be gone in a day. So my question is, is this true or is he just trying to get money out of me?

Theyre bull****ting you. To put it frankly, or probably have never had a fish tank. People that work at fish stores do it constantly. Theyre not looking out for the health of your fish, theyre trying to sell feeders. I dont feed any of my fish feeders just for the reason of the disease feeders carry. Your gar will be fine on the shrimp/tilapia.

I love the recipe. Very similar to mine. I use veal instead of beef. I know it's expensive. I do not have a lot of fish that need lots of food. I can not Beef heart around my neighborhood.I think the calf is so young and sweet, with very little fat and high in protein, it was a good choice for me.I would just think it's too easy digestible too. Very little oil or fat calf. waterfowl Not as bad as some other choices. It funny how many different recipes there. Always try to improve it.

Gars are Piscivores.. that means they eat fish. frozen foods outweigh a majority of live foods in the disease/parasite issue. My Gar get a good variety of Pellets/frozen/ and live foods. shrimp and tilapia are both on that list. I also routinely hunt my local seafood section at the grocery store for deals on smelt, salmon, scallops, and other fish fillets. Mine also go bonkers for frozen krill. On occasion they will also steal a nightcrawler from my fire eels.

I avoid rosys and goldfish unless i know my LPS has clean healthy stock. any live foods should be thoroughly Quarantined before feeding and fed a high quality diet dureing that time. UNlike many other species particularly cichlids Gar do not seem to have issues with Caprids ( which is why feeders in general are so often avoided by most hobbyists) with that being said. I don't think this has ever been proven or disproven. I have personally only seen good growth and health in my 2 Florida Gars, 1 haveing been raised up to about 12" on live alone. as a YOY fish he hit 14" which is on the larger side for a florida.

Gars are unique from most fish in their feeding and general captive habits, They do not follow alot of rules that other species do.

he probably thought you're too pretty and dumb to do your own research

If that is her in the Op's avatar, then the LPS employee would be "nuts" to tell her to feed her gar anything that was not sold in their store. That horndog wants her to buy rosey red minnows to feed her gar so that she will have to come back to his store 3 times a week! Not bad IMHO!:headbang2
