could I use FRP (pvc shower board stuff) instead of fibreglass in a plywood tank and just silicone the seams and where the glass would go

Thats a pretty neat idea, too bad I dont have an answer for you. I wonder if you could use the pvc and then put the pipe adhesive on the seems to get it to "weld" together.
There is someone on here that did that and used GOOP in the seams. Thefishguy also did something with melamine if I remember.
do you think it would be cheaper than liquid rubber?

For a 180 you are way better off buying a used tank instead of building one. especially if you are trying to do it on a budget.
a used 180 here would be like a grand

if you can get a small piece take it and throw it in a tank with some feeders. i imagine it should be fine. the stuff is pretty weather resistant. pain in the ass to cut unless you got multiple sets of tin snips too
