I just picked up an FRT yesterday, and I am kind of confused on what kind of lighting to buy. I know what to feed him, and what kind of water chemistry he needs, but not the lighting. Can someone who owns/has owned an FRT send me in the right direction for lighting.
I will post pics up in the buy/sell forum on sunday/monday, but if you can't wait you can go to flyriverturtles.com. I bought the turtle from the owner of the website, and all of the pics on the website are of my new turtle.:headbang2

IMO - The best lighting is whatever closest you can get to sunlight UV wise...

A UV 5,0 ligth from a good brand will be fine.:D However dont use one of thouse new compact ligths because they tend to be quite powerfull and frts dont need very high uvs

what harm might a strong UV lamp cause anFRT, Coura? I'm saying this because mine is in a big tank with a 55 W uv lamp

outdoors there is very high uv but since the frt is underwater i would suspect that the uv is filtered out quickly by a few feet of water.

yea i always thought the same....

Hi amigo Miguel I was wondering when your going to show up. Turtle stuff allways brings you to the open:D Well anyway what I was saing is not to use a very high uv lamp in the percentage of uvs that the lamp produces, not the volltage of the lamp it self ;) By another words dont use a 10,0 uv lamp on frts. This more powerfull kind of lamps is dessigned for use on desert animals ,say uromastyx, bearded dragons ,friled dragons, etc, wich have a very high need for uvs. Frts on the other hand need less intense uv radiacion for calcium sintesis and normal behavior. For aquatic turts the best uv lamps are thouse of 5.0 uvb (except for medicinal porpouses for wich the level can be incresed). That doesant mean that the stronger ligths cant be used too but you are riscking causing eye damage to your tut. Thats also why I dont use thouse brand new compact ligths(heat, ligth and uv on one lamp). Normal uv flurescent ligths work great and dont have the hazzards of thouse. That being said your 55w lamp is perfectly safe for use:D

allright. I got you know . we were mixing oranges and apples...

Thanks guys, I am going to pick up one of the 5.0 lights. I am pretty sure they wont, but will these lights effect my fish at all? I have arows, polys, and a gar in there too.
