Hello everyone,
Does anyone know how to stop or prevent shell curl on the outer edges of an Frt?
Or what could be causing it?
Any advice would really be appreciated!!

Much Thanks!

Too much protein in their diet causes shell curl. Back off on protein and your turtle will be fine. I fed my young ones kiwi halves, frozen peas, and (every third day) Ken's earthworm sticks and rabbit pellets. I also keep bunches of anacharis for them to graze on. When kiwi fruit wasn't available, I gave them zucchini, shredded carrot, and potato slices. As they mature their protein requirements increase. My 2 and 3 year olds still get kiwi but, they also look for meat in their diet. So, I offer them catfish pieces, raw shrimp, earthworms (and earthworm sticks), and the occassional live minnow. Their substrate includes crushed oyster shell for calcium and I keep cuttlebone in their W/D filter. I also keep Dr Turtle's sulpha blocks in the W/D reservoir to prevent skin and shell infections. My 4 y/o FRT get's every thing listed plus 2 cubes of VHP frozen food a week.

*Alright thanks for the informatiion Oddball! Hey do you think algae wafers have too much protien? What about Frozen market shrimp? Oh yeah i use doctor turtle.. is that enough calcium?
Thanks!*

I've never tried algae wafers so I can't advise on them. With over 100 tanks, I look to economize where I can. I've found rabbit pellets to work just fine for all my herbivores. I buy 50lb bags for around $15. Frozen market shrimp is fine but, I don't recommend it until the turtle is 2 years old. This bolus of protein will promote shell curl. For young turtles, I offer cress lettuce instead of shrimp to provide iodine in their diet. Calcium is provided in the form of cuttlebone in the W/D reservoir and oyster shell in the substrate. If your turtle will surface feed, reptomin sticks will provide the calcium it needs.

good advice from Oddball - just cut out the protein (no fish, shrimp etc) until the turtle grows a bit - I used to feed mine cheap economy hikari koi pellets - high vegetable content, - algae wafers and bits of green veggie - it grew 6" in less than 8 months

use quality turtle pellets that contains high calcium
just like other reptiles.. prone to some kind of bone whatever..
