I need help. I have fruit flies in my large aquarium and cannot get rid of them. We have tried putting towels over the tank but this does not seem to help. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

They're probably not fruit flies, but fungus gnats. They can live off all sorts of stuff, mold or fungus in a potted plant, crap growing on a clogged filter, ect. You probably have some of your filter material sticking above the water line and they zero in on that, eating algae and whatever else is growing on it. See if you can completely submerge your media.. that should help. Otherwise, look to see what else is constantly wet that is sticking out of the water and might have something growing on it...

Does condensation drip off that glass and allow algae to grow? That could be what they are feeding on.

do this: get a small cup, pour about 1 ounce of vinegar in and add 1 drop of dish soap. swirl it a bit to mix the two together. try to place it as close to the source without endangering your tank of course. give it a few days, and you will see some of the flies have drowned. they are attracted to the scent, climb in and drown. this is an old trick from my pest control tech days. hope this helps. if it doesn't, lemme know and i will give you more ideas
