As of this morning i have in an establised and well cleaned 90 gall with an 11" Oscar and a 10"pleco fruit flies floating on top of the water :swear: ,never had this happen before temp is 82 deg f ,I vacum 30 percent of the tank weekly is this something that can be prevented or is this a fluke ? any advice would be apprecated thx FNH........

fruit flies arent aquatic so if they were foating on your tank they were drowning or dead, the maggots live in fruit, usually bannanas, adults fly around.Got a pic of them ?

my camera wont pick them up they are to small they are floating and dead also they are a light teal color, really dont understand how they got there my other tanks are fine i do have zucinni on a rock for the pleco but that came from the fridge and was fresh

Sounds like fruit flies,if so they didnt come from the water so dont worry about the fish,if oscar was smaller he would enjoy eating them.Sure you didnt drop a piece of zuchini behind the tank last week? :)

They could have been attracted to the light and then drowned while flying around it.

Fruit flies and some midges are everywhere, if you don't believe me leave a peeled banana on a plate for a week. They often feed on surface scum (the protien film) in tanks, more surface agitation will discourage them. It seems to be more common in cold weather.
